“His interment changes the status of the cemetery,” Dodge says about Sheridan. Sheridan was the highest-ranking general at the time to be buried at Arlington. Meigs’ death came a few years after General Philip Sheridan was interred near the front of the Arlington house upon his death in August of 1888. Meigs himself was buried in Arlington National Cemetery behind the house when he died in January of 1892, and Meigs lived to see the cemetery start to gain prestige, Dodge says. “It wasn’t really the cemetery held in high regard … but in the 1890s, you had Union officers that wanted to be interred there,” Dodge says. Today, the cemetery is 639 acres, where about 400,000 veterans and their eligible dependents are interred.ĭodge says that Meigs probably wouldn’t be surprised at what Arlington National Cemetery became, even though it initially was referred to as a potter’s field-a burial ground for poor soldiers whose families couldn’t afford to bring them home. Within a year, more than 5,000 soldiers, mainly privates, were buried there. About a month later, on June 15, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ordered that the new cemetery become Arlington National Cemetery, which at the time was about 200 acres. The native of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania died of measles and had only served in the Army about 60 days. The first body to be buried was William Henry Christman on May 13, 1864. So Meigs seized the opportunity to turn the Lee property into much-needed cemetery space to accommodate the mounting casualties. started filling up from soldiers dying on battlefields and in hospitals in Union-controlled Alexandria, Virginia. “The inference was to punish Lee.”Īmerican Civil War History First Burial in May 1864Ĭemeteries near Washington, D.C. “I think a fair inference from the action he took was that he wanted to make the property uninhabitable in case of the remote chance the Southern states successfully seceded,” says Dodge, an Arlington, Virginia-based lawyer who does estate work. This Tomb of the Civil War Unknowns, dedicated in September 1866, was intended to further mark the Lee property with the grim reality of war, Dodge says. After the war, an estimated 2,111 unknown bodies were exhumed from battlefields and reburied in a mass grave deliberately placed in Mrs. Meigs went a step further to plant a painful reminder to the Lees, if they ever returned to Arlington, about the carnage the Civil War caused. A furious Meigs, who detested Lee once his former friend turned on the United States for the Confederacy, said he was “grimly satisfied” as the tombstones started to fill the hill surrounding the house. But federal troops, under orders from Georgia-born Brigadier General Montgomery Meigs, made the property difficult to return to by burying the bodies of Union soldiers near the house. The Lees would never return to live at Arlington Estate, which was completed in 1818. Then, on May 24, Union troops moved into Arlington and occupied the grand house. She left the 1,100-acre property and its many heirlooms in the care of an enslaved woman named Selina Gray. “The Arlington house was high ground: If Confederates got it, they could bombard Washington, D.C.” Union Troops Move Into the Arlington EstateĪlthough she resisted for a few weeks, Mary Custis Lee accepted what seemed the inevitable Union takeover of the Greek Revival home she had inherited from her father and fled to a nearby family house. They can even survive for several months between meals. The important thing to keep in mind is that bed bugs reproduce very quickly, and they can live for as long as a year. So if you’re wondering, “Do bed bugs travel on people?” they may stick to clothes, but not to the skin. Unlike ticks or fleas, they don’t live on their hosts. Understanding what attracts bed bugs and how they behave can make it easier to eliminate the pests and avoid future bed bug transmission.īed bugs are unpleasant, but fortunately they do not pose a significant health risk. Luckily, there are plenty of effective methods for how to get rid of bed bugs in a mattress that don’t require purchasing a whole new bed. If there are bed bugs on a person’s clothes or belongings when they enter a home, the bugs are liable to stick around and continue to reproduce for as long as they have access to blood from the home’s residents or pets.Īs the title suggests, it is most common to encounter bed bugs in mattresses. Bed bugs are often associated with dirty houses or cheap hotels, but the truth is that even very clean homes are susceptible. They are most active at night, which is why it is common for homeowners who have bed bugs to wake up with itchy welts that seem to come from nowhere. But what are bed bugs, and how do bed bugs spread? How easy is it to get bed bugs? These tiny, bloodsucking insects like to burrow in mattresses and other upholstered furniture in order to stay close to their food sources. The reason? Bed bugs infiltrate the one place that should be a comforting refuge at the end of the day. On the list of household pests that homeowners dread the most, bed bugs rank fairly high. The character of Willie, a minor hero of the novel who stays chiefly off stage, is given one stirring political speech about climate change that Murray admits does “slightly break the fourth wall” and which expresses many of his own views. View image in fullscreen The cover of Murray’s book. “A plan to serialise it as a drama for television is in the works,” he said. It has proved both a popular and critical hit since its publication by Hamish Hamilton last June and this weekend Murray revealed that negotiations to bring his rollercoaster story to the screen are well under way. The judges, led by Booker winner Bernardine Evaristo, included writers Sara Collins, Sarfraz Manzoor, Anthony Quinn and Dave Rudden.Ĭoncern about climate change is woven through The Bee Sting, which follows two generations of an Irish family as they struggle to stay on track while keeping dangerous personal secrets. Also in contention for the overall winner’s prize at last Thursday night’s London ceremony were the debut novel, Close to Home, by Michael Magee, and the children’s story, The Swifts, by Beth Lincoln. Murray’s novel, which topped the fiction category a month ago, was then pitted against the other category winners, including Scottish writer Fern Brady’s non-fiction memoir, Strong Female Character. The annual competition has filled the gap left by the prestigious former Costa prize, an award that ran for 50 years and was initially known as The Whitbread. Murray was talking to the Observer in his first interview since winning the £30,000 prize for Book of the Year at the inaugural awards. I’m a Catholic, but I don’t think even that religion could invent something inspiring so much guilt… Paul Murray I really do think it’s so important to always have students talk about the theme or the big ideas in books, even from an early age. In stations, have students generate more words for the other word families in the book. Some words my students suggested were zig, twig, fig, and big. As a class, we would generate other words in that family. I would have students start word families with pig and wig. As you can see, most of them follow identical spelling patterns. They love it! Some of the rhyming words in the book are pig/wig, share/swear, stuff/puff, and scoot/loot. I would project the pages of the story on an interactive whiteboard the second time I read it through, pointing to the words as I read them and have the kids read the rhyming word on each page. This is always a fun way to get the kids to read with you. Read the story once all the way through for enjoyment and then, when you read it a second time, ask the kids to pay attention to the rhyming words. So why not put this book in a station after it has been read out loud so that students can enjoy reading it over and over? I loved reading it multiple times … and I’m 40(ish). The students are able to hear the words and predict what words might be used and they can easily remember the words when they do repeated readings. When you read it out loud it almost becomes musical. Most kids, possibly most adults, enjoy rhyming text. Here’s an example using Doodle Buddy and VoiceThread: It’s up to you and your technology situation! Here is where you can get creative! Have the students draw their explanation on paper as above and take a picture of it to upload, or have them use an app to do the drawing. They can read/listen to each other’s comments and respond, making it an interactive experience.īut, you have to have something to talk about, something to upload. What makes VoiceThread a valuable addition to your app toolbelt is the ability for students to have “conversations” around the media. Both options involve students using an app/website to annotate their drawing and add their thought process to create a video of sorts that lets you “get inside their heads.” We’ve used a lot of different apps, but VoiceThread is an easy one that lets you annotate and record. This is a great (and fun!) opportunity to incorporate technology in the form of an app smash! You have two options here. These can be displayed on a bulletin board so all the students can see all the phrases. Then have students work alone or in pairs to draw the literal meaning and then the figurative meaning. Īfter explaining idioms, read More Parts by Tedd Arnold. Here is what the word detectives found on this particular phrase. I have found that even the youngest kids are interested in this sort of information. Depending on the age of your students, you could explain the history of this phrase. In this book, the idiom “flipped his wig” is written. Idioms don’t literally mean what they say, the students will need to make inferences about what the phrase really means. Idioms are expressions that are particular to a certain person or group of people. In addition, it is sure to bring a smile to all your students’ faces.Įxplicitly teach your students about this specific type of figurative language. The rhyming pages and rhythmic text almost begs to be read out loud. This is such a great read-aloud for elementary students. He hoards his toys and refuses to share with the other dog, at least until he has no other option. Pig is such a loveable character who, like my children, doesn’t want to share. The third time, I read it with a teacher’s lens. The second time I read it out loud to my ten-year-old. There’s something about the greedy pug named Pig and his interaction with the other dog that made me smile. When I read the title, my own slight confusion made me want to read the book. Pugs are adorable anyway, but the bright color contrast and the bewildered face of this pug drew me in. Once again, the adorable cover caught my eye. ** Contact us if you would like Literary Fusions to come to your campus with engaging, evidence-based, and practical professional development ** When it comes to getting the greatest possible streaming TV experience, you have a lot of options these days. It's easy to see why Hulu + Live TV is one of the most popular streaming services. Does Hulu + Live TV's Channel List Beat the Rest? Hulu + Live TV is more expensive than Sling TV and "skinny bundles" like Philo but has significantly more content. The channel lineups for the services are comparable, but Hulu offers original content that can't be found on other services. You'll also get original content including Trolls: TrollsTopia, Animaniacs, Holly Hobbie, and The Bravest Knight which can't be found anywhere other than Hulu. Some notable exclusions include Bally Sports (formerly Fox Sports Networks), Marquee Sports Network, and NESN (New England Sports Network). It's important to note that Hulu does not have an agreement with every regional sports network.
